Gymnasium Grand Opening
On Saturday, October 5th we celebrated the grand opening of our two new gymnasiums. These buildings, housed at Bud Carson Middle School and Prairie Vista Middle School, were made possible by the voters of Hawthorne when a bond was approved to create the gyms in 2008.
The structures are unique in that they are prefabricated insulated steel panels which allows for a short timeline for completion. Both sites began construction in October of 2012 and were complete in July 2013. We were able to construct both buildings for approximately $6.3 million which was a significant reduction from the original estimate.
These structures are approximately 12,000 square feet with indoor and outdoor stage components. They allow for configuration for basketball, volleyball, performances, and other indoor activities. These facilities will allow the students and community to house various events throughout the year.
Our ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by staff, students, parents, and elected officials. Assemblyman Steven Bradford was in attendance at the Bud Carson opening and presented the school district with a certificate commemorating the event.
The Hawthorne School District looks forward to these buildings being accessed by both the school and community. The school district is currently establishing criteria for public use of the gymnasiums. They will soon be available for public use.
Thank you to the Hawthorne community for making these gymnasiums possible!
