Special Education

The Hawthorne School District offers a continuum of services and program options that provide children with special needs access to a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. Children that have suspected or identified disabilities in the areas listed below may be eligible to receive special education services at no cost to parents in the least restrictive environment to the maximum extent appropriate. Eligibility varies and is based on Ed Code and student's educational needs.

  5. Orthopedic Impairment
  6. Autism
  7. Deafness
  8. Other Health Impairment
  9. Traumatic Brain Injury

  11. Specific Learning Disabilities
  12. Vision Impairment
  13. Deaf-Blindness

The Hawthorne School District provides a variety of Special Education services including, but not limited to the following based on student’s educational needs:

  • Specialized Academic Instruction
  • Speech and Language
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Adapted Physical Education
  • Educationally Related Intensive Counseling Services
  • Specialized Services for Low Incidence Disabilities
  • Audiological Services
  • Health & Nursing
  • Preschool Programs

Parents of students with exceptional needs have additional rights and protections referred to as: Parent's Rights and Procedural Safeguards. This document is available in English and in Spanish under the Southwest SELPA link.
